Indian Alcohol & Substance Abuse Grant

The Indian Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program allows American Indian and Alaska Native communities to plan and implement activities that will reduce and control crime associated with the distribution and use of alcohol and other controlled substance in tribal communities. Through this program, recipients will develop new strategies or enhance existing ones to prevent, interdict and treat alcohol and drug use by tribal members.

One of the court’s goals is to establish a drug task force with tribal assistance, which will develop drug policies that address the specific needs of the Kalispel community.

The program aims to:

Identify, apprehend and prosecute those who illegally transport, distribute or use alcohol or controlled substances.

Prevent and reduce the number of crimes related to substance abuse (with a priority on methamphetamine) and alcohol such as traffic fatalities and other injuries.

Develop and enhance collaborations with federal, state, tribal and local criminal justice agencies.

Integrate tribal and non-tribal recovery services for offenders and their families.

Make culturally and spiritual sensitive treatment and counseling available to the Kalispel community.

The Malye’ es ?iyal (Heals All Circle) Coordinator is charged with administrating the Indian Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program. The coordinator’s objective is to work with tribal members and the Kalispel community to bring about the mission of the Malye’ es ?iyal Committee and to use traditional culture to realize our vision of a balanced, united, caring, strong, drug-free community for our children and our future.

The Malye’ es ?iyal Coordinator will implement strategies and tactics set forth by the Malye’ es ?iyal Committee, e.g., facilitate training on alcohol and drug abuse, including methamphetamine and prescription drugs, assist the Tribe to enhance prevention and treatment services, and lend support to the Tribe. The Malye’ es ?iyal Coordinator promotes activities based on the Tribe’s culture and tradition that will make for a healthy community.
